BIOPOLY Cluster welcomes FURIOUS: a new partner for Bio-Based Innovation

The BIOPOLY Cluster is glad to welcome the FURIOUS project as its newest member, joining POLYMERS-5B, POLYMEER and BIOPYRANIA in a joint effort to accelerate innovation in sustainable, bio-based polymers.

What is FURIOUS?

FURIOUS is a four-year Horizon Europe project, funded by the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU), that started in June 2023. Bringing together 15 partners from 7 EU countries — universities, research organisations, SMEs and large industrial players — the project develops a new generation of high-performance bio-based polymers derived from 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), designed as sustainable alternatives to fossil-based plastics. FURIOUS targets three demanding industrial sectors: biomedical and electronic packaging, the automotive sector, and underwater devices, with particular attention to green, low-impact production processes.

Why this synergy matters

With FURIOUS on board, the BIOPOLY Cluster now unites four complementary Horizon Europe projects, each working on different bio-based feedstocks, monomers and polymer classes, but sharing the same mission: reducing dependence on fossil resources and advancing circular, bio-based materials for real industrial applications. Together, POLYMERS-5B, POLYMEER, BIOPYRANIA and FURIOUS can exchange best practices, cross-pollinate scientific insights, and reach a wider audience through joint dissemination and shared events — turning individual research efforts into a stronger, more visible collective impact for the future of sustainable polymers.
