Bio-Based Fibers: Shaping the Future of the Textile Industry
| The textile sector is undergoing a profound transformation as it seeks to balance growing consumer demand with environmental responsibility. Global fiber production is rapidly increasing, rising from 116 million tons in 2022 to 124 million tons in 2023, with forecasts reaching 160 million tons by 2030. This growth brings environmental challenges, particularly with polyester – dominating 57% of the market in 2023 – due to its petroleum-based, non-biodegradable composition and contribution to microplastic pollution. Cotton, while natural, has a significant ecological footprint, demanding large amounts of water and land. In response, bio-based fibers such as hemp and nettle are gaining attention as sustainable alternatives, offering lower resource consumption and reduced environmental impact. However, barriers like cost and scalability remain obstacles. Europe’s commitment to circular value chains is driving innovation in the textile sector, the textile industry is taking critical steps toward a future where growth aligns with sustainability and circularity. |
