PhD Miķelis Kirpļuks showcased Bio-Based Vitrimer Innovations at Baltic Polymer Symposium 2025 in Estonia | 1-3.10.2025

At the 23rd Baltic Polymer Symposium (October 1–3, 2025), PhD , senior researcher at the Polymer Laboratory of the Latvian State Institute of Wood Chemistry (LSIWC), delivered a keynote presentation on bio-based vitrimers:

Design and characterisation of bio-based β-amino polyester resins with reprocessable thermoset behaviour.

Vitrimers are thermosetting polymer materials with dynamic covalent bonds, enabling them to retain durability while being repaired, reshaped, and reused. This innovative concept opens up new possibilities for adhesives, coatings, and composites in sectors where high mechanical strength must be combined with efficient resource reprocessing.

Our first achievements in vitrimer development are recyclable thermoset resins that combine long-term durability with the ability to be reprocessed. In particular, the bio-based vitrimers we developed contain up to 90% biocarbon content, offering a significant step toward sustainable material solutions. This creates new opportunities for adhesives, coatings, and composites,
